Recognizing the need for youth oriented services in the Blackford County area, a study group was formed from members of the Hartford City Knights of Columbus and the Blackford Masonic Lodge. After researchingvarious alternatives, the decision was made to start a YMCA, and on December 15, 1995, the Blackford County YMCA was organized.The YMCA started out as a non-facility operation running all programs out of the local school system. In 2004, the Blackford County moved into its first facility located in the Marsh plaza in Hartford City. The facility includes a wellness center, ChildWatch, KidZone, walking track, locker rooms, state of the art meeting facilities and multi-purpose room. Blackford Community Hospital offers physical therapy programs out of the YMCA.
The Blackford County YMCA operates as a branch of the Muncie Family YMCA. The Muncie Family YMCA provides professional and administrative support, while the Blackford Countybranch is responsible for establishing and maintaining the programmed activities for the community. The mission of the Blackford County YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Objectives are to provide such services that benefit all ages, from youth and adolescents, through adults and senior citizens. The Blackford County YMCA works in collaboration with the Blackford County School system to provide the many program opportunities offered by the YMCA.
Programming has continued to grow since 1995, and has included sports, health and wellness, and child care. Youth programs included tumbling, martial arts, basketball, volleyball, swim lessons, recreational swimming and dance. School-age child care is offered year-round, with a summer day camp located at Hartford City Middle School and an after-school program located at Northside Elementary School. Adult programs include wellness, nutrition, martial arts, basketball, recreational swimming and older adult programming. Blackford County YMCA members may also participate in any programs offered by the Muncie Family YMCA.
